DENSITY
Density is used to describe how concentrated or
how packed an object is like the picture below:
Less Dense More Dense
2
DENSITY
Another way to define density is
how much matter there is in a
given volume.
Less Dense More Dense
3
VOLUME
Regularly shaped objects:
Volume = length x width x height.
4
HOW DO YOU DETERMINE THE
DENSITY OF AN OBJECT?
•First you must determine the
○ the mass of the object
○ the volume of that object
•The formula is
○ Density = mass/volume
(d=m/v)
5
MASS
•The amount of matter in an object
•Can use different types of scales.
Weight is different from mass. Weight is defined
as the force of gravity on an object
6
Volume
To find the volume of an irregularly shaped object like a rock: use the water displacement
method.
This method
involves dropping
the object into a
measured amount of water and seeing how much the water level rises.
7
In order to find the displacement of water you must know
how to read themeniscus correctly! Look at the bottom of the curve to accurately read the measurement.
