9

Open Ended

Name 6 air pollutants that you have learned. (CM, NO, SD, M, O, UH)

10

Effects of Carbon Monoxide

Carbon monoxide binds with haemoglobin in the blood which prevents oxygen from being transported to all parts of the body.

This will lead to oxygen starvation.

11

Effects of Oxides of Nitrogen

  1. Irritates eyes and lungs causing breathing difficulties.

  2. Forms acid rain - which corrodes buildings and harm aquatic life and plants

12

Effects of Sulfur dioxide

  1. Irritates eyes and lungs causing breathing difficulties.

  2. Forms acid rain - which corrodes buildings and harm aquatic life and plants

13

How is Acid Rain formed?

Sulfur dioxide react with water and oxygen in the atmosphere to form sulfuric acid.

Nitrogen dioxide react with water and oxygen in the atmosphere to form nitric acid.

*Note: Equations are in the lesson notes

14

Effects of Acid Rain

  1. Acid reacts with metals and limestones causing them to corrode.

  2. Acid rain leaches nutrients causing the plants to wither and die.

  3. Acid rain reduces the pH values of water bodies causing the water bodies to become too acidic for aquatic life to survive.
