Clause vs. Phrase

• A clause will have both a suject and a verb.

• There are 2 types of clauses:

  • Independent clause

  • Dependent clause

• A phrase is a group of words that contain either a subject or a verb.

  • Prepostional phrase

  • Adjective phrase

  • Adverb phrase

Independent Clause v Dependent Clause

• Has both a subject and a verb, but doesn't convey a complete idea.

  • If you have to leave

  • Since it is the last class

  • Because I took the book

​Dependent Clause

• Has both a subject and a verb and conveys a complete thought.

  • I like takling to you.

  • Jason and Becky ate their sandwiches at the dinner table.

Independent Clause

• Dependent clauses have to be paired with an independent clause in one of the following ways:

  • Because I took the book, Allie wasn't able to study for her test.

  • Allie wasn't able to study for the test because I took the book.
