• Most thermometers have a liquid inside that can expand when it is hot, and contract (shrinks) when its cold.

Precipitation

• Precipitation is the water that falls from the sky.

• This can be different forms: hail, snow, rain, sleet.

• Meteorologists use rain gauges to measure the amount of water that falls.

Wind Direction

• Meteorologists use tools to measure two properties of wind: Speed & Direction

• Weather Vane or Wind Sock: shows wind direction

• The arrow and sock tip points in the direction the wind is blowing.

Wind Speed

• Meteorologists use tools to measure two properties of wind: Speed & Direction

• An Anemometer is used to measure how fast the wind blows.

• The faster the cups spin, the faster the wind is blowing.

Air Pressure

• Air pressure is the pressure a column of air above a certain location exerts on Earth's Surface.

• How hard the air is pushing down.

• Meteorologists use a barometer to measure air pressure.
