Cell Cycle Unit 1

Every day, all day, your cells are going

through processes. One process is

cell division. When you have an injury,

or when you grow, your cells are

dividing. Skin cells renew themselves

every 27 days. Blood cells take 4-6

weeks to be replaced.

Cell Cycle- the ordered
sequence of events in
the life of a eukaryotic cell.

It includes interphase,

mitosis, and cytokinesis.

Mitosis - stage of the cell cycle

when the nucleus divides

divides. It includes prophase, metaphase, anaphase,
telophase.

Chromosome

- contains

DNA

Interphase - stage of the
cell cycle when the cell
grows, replicates DNA,
and copies organelles.
The majority of a cell’s life is spent in Interphase

G1 - Stage of Interphase when

the cell grows and prepares to replicate DNA

S (Synthesis) - Stage of
Interphase when DNA is copied

G2 - Stage of Interphase

when organelles are
copied in preparation

for mitosis.

Prophase - 1st stage of mitosis when the nucleus membrane breaks down and the chromatids condense into chromosomes.

Metaphase - 2nd stage of mitosis when the chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell.

Anaphase - 3rd stage of mitosis when
the spindle fibers pull the chromosomes APART.

Telophase - 4th stage of mitosis where the cell begins to sparate into TWO cells.

Cytokinesis- “Cyto”=cell

“kinesis”=apart

The daughter cells separate into two cells
