When a rock is thrown in to pond , waves ripple out from where the rock lands.

When an earthquake happens waves of energy from the focus radiate out from the epicenter of the earthquake.
Unlike the pond the waves travel in all direction from the epiccenter

An earthquake occurs when there is a sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust.

The release of energy creates
Seismic Waves.
These are waves of energy that travel through the Earth, causing earthquakes

The energy moves in the form of waves, similar to how ripples move across a pond when a stone is thrown into it.

Light waves allow us to see.
Sound waves allow us to hear.
Infrared Waves allow heating
Seismic waves carry energy from place to place.

There are three main types of seismic waves
primary (P) waves
secondary (S) waves
surface waves

• P wave.

• Moves the fastest

• 3 Miles per second | 5km/sec

• First waves to reach any location from an earthquake.

• Waves travel through the earth.

• Can travel through solid, liquids and gasses.

• Cause material they pass through are slightly pulled and pushed apart

• Can cause some damage.
  

Primary Wave

• S waves

• Travel slower than P waves.

  • Half as fast. (1.5 mi/sec)

• Second wave to reach any location from an earthquake.

• Move through the earth interior.

• Can only travel through solids ( earth).

  • Cannot travel through Liquids and gasses

• Cause material moved through are in a shaken side to side or up and down.

• They can cause some damage.

Secondary wave

• Travels the slowest.

• The last wave to reach any location from an earthquake, affecting a larger area and causing longer shaking.

• Move along the surface of the earth.

• Cause material they pass through to move roll up and down or side to side.

• They can MOST some damage.

• Surface waves can cause sway and shake, leading to structural damage and collapse during an earthquake.
