(in your own words)

Paraphrasing is taking what someone else has written or said and putting it into your own words.
Remember, authors want credit for their work, and paraphrasing is how you can use information from another source in your own work.

Read the following sentence:
A variety of aquatic creatures can be kept as pets in your home.
"aquatic" isn't a word that 5th graders commonly use.
Many may not yet know the meaning of the word aquatic.
How can we still use this information in our research?
6
Remember, paraphrasing is putting someone else's ideas in your own words.
So, we can change the word "aquatic" to a word that is much more familiar to us. We can paraphrase this sentence by changing "aquatic" to "water". We can also change "creatures" to "animals." Last, let's change the word "variety" to "many."
So, our paraphrase of the sentence might sound something like this:
Many animals that live in water may be kept as pets.
Now, we have used our own words to retell what the author is saying.
