A nem meghatározó vagy bővítő mellékmondat több információt nyújt a szóban forgó dologról vagy személyről. Ha a nem meghatározó vonatkozói mellékmondatot eltávolítjuk, valamennyi információt elveszítünk, de a mondat átfogó értelme megmarad. A nem meghatározó vonatkozói mellékmondatokat mindig vesszőkkel vagy zárójelekkel különítjük el a mondat többi részétől.
