「場所を示す副詞」の働き

​where 先行詞は「場所」を表す語。場合によっては先行詞の省略あり。

Do you know a shop where I can find sandals?　サンダルがあるお店を知ってる？

Do you know a shop?　　　　 I can find sandals there [at the shop]

　　　　　　     副詞　 　前置詞+名詞

    ⇒Do you know a shop at which I can find sandals?

This is the place (where) we lived five years ago.

  = This is where we lived five years ago.　ここが、私たちが５年前に住んでいた場所です。

「場所」という単語が先行詞になる場合は
先行詞を省略することができる。

​when 先行詞は「時」を表す語。

I’ll never forget the day when I first met you.　初めて会った日のことは決して忘れません。

I’ll never forget the day   I first met you then [on the day].

                      副詞　 前置詞+名詞

    ⇒I’ll never forget the day on which I first met you.

I remember the time when there were no electric lights.

= I remember when there were no electric lights.　私は電気のなかった時代を覚えています。

「時」という単語が先行詞になる場合は先行詞を省略することができる。

​why 先行詞はreason(s)のみ。先行詞の省略可。

Tell me the reason why you came home late.　家に帰るのが遅くなった理由を言いなさい。

    Tell me the reason.     you came home late for it.

前置詞+名詞

    ⇒Tell me the reason for which you came home late.

This is the reason why I will refuse the offer. 

= This is why I will refuse the offer.　こういうわけでその申し出はお断りします。

​how先行詞なし
