1. Add -es to verbs ending in -ch, -o, -s, -ss, -sh,and -x:
   watch → watches, go → goes

2. Change verbs ending in consonant + y to -i:

   study → studies

3. Do NOT change the ending -y after a vowel:

   buy → buys NOT buies

4. Note also have → has

At the beginning or the end of the sentence:

Every year they celebrate St Patrick’s Day.

They celebrate St Patrick’s Day every year.

​Position of expressions

• Before the main verb

The Irish always wear green on St Patrick’s Day.

• ​After the verb to be

Guests are often late.

​Position of adverbs

You can use the present continuous with verbs such as:

eat, play, study, run, create, etc.

They are studying English to get a better job..

​Action Verbs

You usually use the present simple with verbs such as:
be, like, believe, look, understand, and know.

• ​I understand what you mean. ✓

• I’m understanding what you mean. ✗
