Now let's consider our essay...

We are going to prepare to write our first body paragraph today. Let's start by identifying the purpose of our first body paragraph. This should align with the first topic in your thesis statement. Use your organizer to identify this.

Step 1: Topic Sentences

​A topic sentence contains the main idea of your paragraph and introduces the reader to your topic. In our case, we are introducing the causes of a phobia. Avoid putting too many details in your topic sentence.

Example - Topic Sentence

There are several reasons a person may develop aquaphobia, but a traumatic experience near water is one of the leading causes.

Step 2: Supporting Details

​Provide 2-3 pieces of evidence that explain, support, or elaborate on your topic sentence. These should be relevant facts or examples that help prove your point. Each supporting detail should be in a separate sentence. After presenting your detail, explain and analyze it. This is where you show how each piece of evidence connects to your topic sentence and thesis.

Example - Supporting Details

Some people have experienced accidents while swimming like getting caught in a strong current or being stung by a jellyfish. These negative experiences can lead to a fear of swimming and also a fear of water.

Step 3: Concluding Sentence(s)

End the paragraph with a concluding sentence (or 2) that summarizes the main point of the paragraph and connects it back to your thesis statement. This sentence should leave the reader with a sense of closure and transition to the next paragraph.

Example - Concluding Sentence(s)

In conclusion, traumatic water-related experiences can play a significant role in the development of aquaphobia. These experiences leave lasting emotional scars which can contribute to a variety of symptoms.
