SSCG 12 Foreign Policy

-Foreign Policy begins in the Revolutionary War.
-US sends ambassadors to France, Spain, & the Netherlands.
-3 most influential US Ambassadors during this period
1) Ben Franklin
2)John Adams
3)Thomas Jefferson
-They are successful, France joins the US in the war and helps to assure US Independence.

​History of US Foreign Policy

-George Washington only wants economic foreign policy, does not want to get involved in foreign wars.

-Jefferson makes the Louisiana Purchase from France in an act of Economic foreign policy.

-After the war of 1812 America becomes a foreign policy partner with England (called the Anglo American peace)

-The Monroe Doctrine outlines American Foreign policy (calls for European powers to stay out of the western hemisphere)

-around 1890 US Imperialism begins (we go out into the world to build colonies)
-Hawaii
-Central America
-The Panama Canal

-WWI and WWII lead the US to become a world power/the world power.

-Then the Cold War & The War on Terror Escalates US Foreign policy even more.
-Proxy wars: Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq
-Economic policy- Economic aid for countries who either do not support Communism or Terrorism.

-Economic Sanctions
US will not trade with the country and will encourage allies not to trade with the county as well.
-Embargos
US cuts off all trade and economic ties with the country and forces others to do so as well.

-War/support for the countries enemies
US goes to war or actively supports another country that is at war with the enemy country.

-Diplomacy
US tries to work with other countries or regions
Friendly relations are established and fostered

-Humanitarian aid
US sends money or other types of aid to countries in need.

-Treaties
US makes either mutual protection treaties or Economic treaties to foster diplomacy.
