1
STEPS TO SCIENTIFIC METHOD
2
All experiments begin with a QUESTION
A good QUESTION includes both the independent and dependent variables
Independent Variable: condition or factor that is intentionally changed by the Scientist
Dependent Variable: condition or factor that is observed and measured. It is caused to change by the IV.
3
Multiple Choice
What must a good question include?
controlled variable
control group
independent variaable
independent and dependent variables
4
HYPOTHESIS
Predicted Outcome to the experiment
must include both independent and dependent variables
written in "if... then" format
If the (IV) is changed this way, then the (DV) will be changed this way
5
Multiple Choice
What is a hypothesis?
educated gues
predicted outcome
variables which are kept the same
group to which no treatment has been given
6
Multiple Choice
What format is best for a hypothesis?
APA

7
MATERIALS
List of materials necessary for completion of the experiment
must fully describe: size, quantity, type
8
Multiple Select

pinch of salt, hot water, small cup
10g pink Himalayan salt, 1/4 cup of tap water, small bowl
a little salt, some water, any bowl
11
CONCLUSION
Restate the hypothesis
Does the data support my hypothesis or not? no right or wrong statements
use specific data to substantiate findings
what is the relationship between the independent and dependent variables
12
Multiple Select
What all is included in the Conclusion?
relationship between IV and DV
restatement of hypothesis
possible reasons for error
statement declaring whether data supports the hypothesis or not
