1
What happens to something when it is heated?
How is heat transferred?
2
When your hands are cold, many people will rub them together to try and warm them up. Does this actually work?
- How do your hands feel before and after rubbing them together?
Let's Try it Together
3
Open Ended
Why do you think they feel this way?
4
The energy that is transferred from a warmer object to a colder object is called Heat. As an object gets more energy, the particles begin to move more quickly.
Heat
All things are made up of small particles that are constantly in motion. The total amount of energy of all the particles is called Thermal Energy.
Thermal Energy
5
Multiple Choice
The total amount of Kinetic and Potential energy of all the particles in an object is called:

We use temperature to tell us how hot or cold something is. The hotter something gets, the faster the particles inside it move.
Temperature is the measure of the kinetic energy of the particles inside something.
More movement means higher kinetic energy which means higher temperature!
What is temperature?
10
Hotspot
Circle the object that has the particles with the highest kinetic energy.

12
If we add an ice cube to both the teapot and the cup, which one will cool down more quickly?
How does mass effect temperature?
13
Open Ended
The teapot will take longer to cool down and the cup will cool down quickly. Why do you think this is?
14
Why does mass effect temperature change?
The more mass an object has, the more particles it is made up of. It takes more energy to heat up more particles. A smaller object will heat up or cool down more quickly because it has fewer particles.
15
How does heat move, or transfer, from one place to another?
Let's talk about Convection, Conduction, and Radiation
16
The transfer of energy from one object to another that are in direct contact.
Example: Putting your head on your pillow.
Conduction
Heat transfer that occurs through the movement of fluids, which can be liquid or gas.
Example: Boiling Water
Convection
The transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves. Does not require matter to transfer energy.
Example: Campfire
Radiation
