What Is An Inference?

When looking at the picture of the girl and the balloons, you made an inference. You used prior knowledge and context clues to determine that the girl was going to a party.

What is prior knowledge? Prior knowledge is information we

already know from previous experiences.

What are context clues? Context clues are hints and pieces of information
about the characters or the setting.

Inferences are important so you have a stronger understanding of the text you are reading, even when things are not directly stated.

Inferences give you more details about the characters and setting of a story, and help you "read between the lines."
