• Infinitive verbs are verbs that are written in their original form before they are changed (conjugated) to match their subjects.

• Infinitive verbs in Spanish end in -AR, -ER and -IR

• Ejemplos: Caminar, Aprender, Vivir

Changing the Verbs to Match Your Subject

• Conjugation is the act of changing the verb to match the subject of the sentence.

• In Spanish, verbs change for all 6 boxes of the subject-pronoun chart and each set of verbs has a matching set of verb endings for -AR, -ER and -IR verbs.

• Ejemplos: Yo canto, Tú comes, Ellos escriben

​Types of Verbs

• -AR verbs are verbs that end in the letters "AR"

• Example: Cantar

• -ER verbs are verbs that end in the letters "ER"

• Example: Beber

• -IR verbs are verbs that end in the letters "IR"

• Example: Escribir

​Step 2: Figure out where your subject goes in the verb chart based on the ending of the verb (-AR, -ER, IR).
Step 3: Select the appropriate ending for that subject and add it to your verb stem.

Step 1: To conjugate your verb you have to drop the -AR, -ER or -IR off the end of the infinitive verb. The letters that are left over are called the verb stem.
