Time Zones:

• ​Before the adoption of four standard time zones for the continental United States, many towns and cities set their clocks to noon when the sun passed their local meridian, resulting in more than 144 various "local" times across the USA.

• Bad for the Railroads: Due to this lack of time standardization, schedules on the same tracks often could not be coordinated, resulting in collisions

• The major railroad companies as a result began to operate on a coordinated system of four time zones starting in 1883 which led to the creation of the 4 continental time zones we know today

​This made it faster and more efficient to ship goods like cattle, wheat and etc to the markets back East for sale.
