Rem 8.18 Levels of Organization

These are the levels of biological organization you need to know.

Let's look at what makes up each level.

Biological Organization

Organism

One living thing.

Population

Organisms of the
same species that
live in the same area.

Community

A community is all of the
populations that live in the
same area.

Biotic & Abiotic

Biotic factors are things that
are living or were once living.

All the levels so far have only
biotic factors.

Abiotic factors are things that
are not living and have never
been living.

Every level after this will
have biotic and abiotic
factors.

Ecosystem

All of the living things that
live in the same area AND all
of the non-living things in
that area.

Check

The levels of individual,
population, and community
all have only biotic (living)
factors.

Ecosystem is the first level
that includes abiotic
(non-living) factors also.

What level of
organization is this?

This is an ecosystem. The
lowest level of biological
organization that has both
biotic and abiotic factors.

Biome

A group of
ecosystems with
similar weather
and climate.

Biomes

A biome is all of the ecosystems
around the world that have the
same climate. Climate is
determined by precipitation and
temperature for terrestrial (land)
biomes. These also determine the
soil. The abiotic characteristics of a
biome help determine the biotic
factors, plants and animals found
there.

Biosphere

This is where all life exists
and the water, air, and soil
that they live in.
