Middle School

• I am officially a middle schooler!

• In elementary school, it was ok for me to talk to teachers most of the time.

• Now that I am in middle school, I need to hang out with friends more than teachers.

Making a Friend

• It is normal to feel nervous when you are making a new friend.

• To make a new friend you should:

  • Introduce yourself!

  • Ask questions to the person you are talking to so you can find out common interests you might have

  • Listen to what the other person is saying

• Continue to grow the friendship by playing a game, eating lunch, or doing an activity together.

Introducing Yourself

• When you meet someone new, it is important to introduce yourself.

• You can go up to a person and say: "Hi, my name is _______, what's your name?"

• It is important to look at the person you are introducing yourself to so they know you are talking to them.

Turn to the person sitting next to you and introduce yourself to them.

Asking Questions

• After you introduce yourself to someone, it is polite to ask them questions.

• Some questions you can ask them are:

  • What grade are you in?

  • Where did you go to elementary school?

  • What do you like to do for fun?

  • What is your favorite (color, show, food, game, etc.)

Listening

• When you ask a person questions, it is important that you listen to what they are saying. If you do not listen, the other person will think that you do not want to be friends.

• You should ask a person one question, listen to their response, then ask a follow up question, or share your response to the question.

• If you ask a person a lot of questions at once, they may feel overwhelmed.

Turn to the person next to you. Take turns asking a question, listening, then sharing a follow up question or your response.

Growing the Friendship

• Once you have introduced yourself, it is important to grow the friendship.

• You can grow the friendship by:

  • finding common interests

  • playing a game

  • eating lunch together

  • doing an activity together
