Relationship Skills and Building on Citizenship

“All life is interrelated. We are all caught in an inescapable network
of mutuality, tied into a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects
one directly, affects all indirectly...before you finish eating breakfast
in the morning, you’ve depended on more than half of the world.”

Lesson Ideas

What Would You Do: Students will examine their own values after
considering and discussing several social and environmental
dilemmas

Needs vs Wants: Students examine varying levels of human needs
by discussing and analyzing nuances between needs and wants.

International Trade: Illustrate how interdependent the world is by
having students look at international tradeand where everyday
items come from

Relationship Skills Dive

“When children learn more about one another, and when they know their
teachers recognize and celebrate their differences, they are more likely to

feel a sense of community in the classroom. Teachers foster mutual
respect when they provide activities that encourage conversations,

social, and collective well-being.

Such as:

●Demonstrating curiosity and open-mindedness

●Learning how to make a reasoned judgment after analyzing
information, data, and facts

●Identifying solutions for personal and social problems

●Anticipating and evaluating the consequences of one’s
actions

●Recognizing how critical thinking skills are useful both inside
and outside of school

●Reflecting on one’s role to promote personal, family, and
community well-being

●Evaluating personal, interpersonal, community, and
institutional impacts

Factors in Decision Making: Time, Values & Priorities

Time:

●Is this a decision that has to be made quickly?

●Can we take time for a more thoughtful approach?

●Good decisions are predictions made using sound information.

●When we make good decisions we get a hit of dopamine.

●When we make split-second decisions our emotional brain takes over.

Values:

●How do our beliefs about right and wrong play into the decision?

●It is important to discuss values with students.

Priorities:

●Where does this decision fit in the greater framework of what’s going on in our life?

●Create a priority grid. Students get two 8 x 10 pieces of paper and create a grid with 12 boxes. On
one piece have then label the grid with numbers 1-12. You give them a list of words. They write the
word and after having all of the words they tear each box with a word and place it on the numbered
grid according to their belief of its order of importance. They can move words around until they are
satisfied that the order reflects their priorities most of the time.
