A road (Rd.): This is the most general category. It connects two points.

A street (St.): a public way with buildings on both sides. A street many times runs perpendicular to an avenue.

Avenue (Ave.): is often in a city with with streets and buildings on either side. Frequently it runs perpendicular to streets.

Boulevard (Blvd.): a large, wide street with trees on both sides. Often, there's a median with trees.

Lane (Ln.): a narrow road, often in a rural area.

Highway (Hwy.): a major public road that usually connects several cities.

Causeway (Cswy): an elevated road that passes over swampy terrain or water.

Beltway (Bltwy): a highway surrounding a city that permits quick movement without entering the city.

Pathway: a walk for pedestrians.

Sidewalk: a way for pedestrians to walk and not intended for bikes or motorbikes or cars.
