Today we are learning figurative language because

• Not all language is literal, sometimes language is figurative.

• You may read, they have 'butterflies in their stomach'

• It's important to know that they don't have actual butterflies in their stomach.

• The person is actually feeling nervous

• Butterflies in your stomach is a metaphor for feeling nervous

What is Figurative Language?

• Figures of speech that can be words or phrases that mean something different than the words might indicate.

• There are A LOT Of different examples of Figurative Language!

Figurative Language is used to...

• Describe something using descriptive language

• Make the reader have a reaction

• Make a story more interesting

There are different types of Figurative Language:

Metaphor

Simile

Personification

Hyperbole

Alliteration

Idioms

A group of words which mean something different from their original meaning.

Onomatopoeia!

• A word that describes a sound.

• What's your favorite Onomatopoeia? Whisper it to your neighbor!

Alliteration

• Not EVERY word needs to have the same letter or sound but the majority of the words should.

• Can you create an example of Alliteration?

What is an Idiom?

• Mean something different than the words in the phrase might indicate.

Metaphors and Similes

• Metaphors - says one thing is the same as something else.

• Simile- two things are compared using "Like" or "As"

Giving human qualities to something that is not human

Hyperbole! Sooo dramatic!

• Hyperboles are exaggerations!

• Exaggerations are when you are being dramatic, another example could be "I am so hungry I could eat everything in my house!"

The Big Idea...Figurative Language is used for a Reason!

• Author's use Figurative Language in their text to help support their purpose for writing, and make their writing more interesting.

• Author's use Simile's, Hyperbole's and Metaphor's to help paint a picture in the reader's head.

• Author's use Idioms, Onomatopoeia, and Alliteration to make their writing more interesting and engaging for the reader.
