Floriculture Study Guide

Sexual Propagation (Reproduction)

• Uses SEEDS to make a new plant

• GERMINATION: When seeds begin to grow

• DORMANCY: Rest period before germination (usually late fall/winter)

• COTYLEDON: First LEAF (AKA: Seed Leaf)

• Monocotyledon: ONE seed leaf

• Dicotyledon: TWO seed leaves

• RADICLE: First ROOT to emerge

Asexual Propagation (Think of it like CLONING)

• Reproduction by the use of cuttings from leaves, stems, or roots to make new plants

• Scion - Part of the plant attached to the rootstock during grafting

• Rootstock - Plant that receives the graft or bud

• Polarity - Tendency for a cutting to sprout roots from the bottom end and sprout shoots from the top
