formed in 1909 as an interracial endeavor to advance justice for African Americans

​The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC):

African-American civil rights organization based in Atlanta, Georgia. SCLC is closely associated with its first president, Martin Luther King Jr.

​Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC):

In 1962, SNCC embarked on a voter registration campaign in the south as many believed that voting was a way to unlock political power for many African Americans. Many SNCC members again dealt with violence and arrests. The Freedom Summer of 1964 saw SNCC focus its efforts in Mississippi.
