Marbury vs Madison

• William Marbury was appointed federal judge by John Adams. 

• James Madison refused to honor the appointment. Marbury sued

• Supreme Court ruled against Marbury.

• Established principal of Judicial Review - the ability of the Supreme Court to declare any law unconstitutional.

The Louisiana Purchase of 1803

• United States wanted to purchase New Orleans, an important port for Americans living west of the Appalachians, from France

• U.S. purchases the Louisiana Territory for $15 million securing access to Mississippi River & New Orleans

• Gained all land between the Mississippi and Rocky Mountains doubling the country’s size. 

Lewis and Clark

• 1804 – 1806 Meriwether Lewis & William Clark were sent to explore the Land. Two goals:

• Learn about the land and people

• Find a river route to the Pacific Ocean 

• Assisted by Sacagawea, a Shoshone Indian

The Embargo Act of 1807

• Banned trade with all foreign countries until the two stopped attacking us.

• Destroyed the American economy & had no effect on Britain or France

• Banned trade only with France & Britain until they stopped attacking us.

• It had no effect
