Not every state supported the conflict at the start of the War of 1812. The opposing political party, Federalists, and New England states were against the conflict.

Nearly half of all the American Army were new recruits. State militias were poorly trained.

Ameriicans underestimated the British and their Native American allies. Americans failed to invade Canada and lost Detriot to the British, a key city on the Great Lakes.

One advantage the United States had was fast moving warships, known as frigates. Oliver Hazard Perry commanded a win for the Americans in Lake Erie.

​With Tecumseh's death, the idea of a Native American confederation to stop Amerians moving west ended. The British and Native American alliance also ended.

The Native American tribe known as the Creek was once a large group in control of much of the southeast United States. After defeat by Andrew Jackson and the Americans, the Creek had to give up land.

In the Spring of 1814 the British attacked and destroyed buildings in Washington D.C. The British moved on to Baltimore, where fighting inspired Francis Scott Key to write "The Star-Spangled Banner."

Congress designated the "Star-Spangled Banner" as the national anthem in 1931.

Americans were able to win at Plattsburgh in a naval battle. The British retreated to Canada. Having already beat Napoleon the British did not want to another costly war with little benefit.

The Treaty of Ghent would end the war.

Americans win a huge victory eventhough the war was officially over word had not reached the United States. Andrew Jackson is a hero.

Did not change any existing borders. No mention of impressment of sailors (the key issue at the start of the conflict).

Andrew Jackson would become president in 1828

More Americans felt proud about their nation and people started to feel "American" as a source of who they were. This allowed the War Hawks in congress to take control of politics for the next few decades.

War Hawks had favored the war throughout the conflict.
