What does the moon do for us?

The moon is a giant rock. It doesn't make its own light. It looks illuminated because the sun shines on the moon. The moon reflects the light from the sun. We only see the side of the moon facing the sun.

As the moon revolves around Earth, we see only the lighted portion. It waxes or wanes depending on the location during revolution.
