Middle East Lesson One Vocabulary

Canal-a long, narrow ditch that is filled with water and was created by people so that boats could pass through it or to supply fields, crops, etc., with water

Examples

• The farmer used water from the canal to water his crops.

• The boat floated lazily down the canal.

Irrigation-to supply land or crops with water by using artificial means like a hose,
pipe, or a canal

Examples:

• Because this region is dry, farmers must irrigate their crops; they cannot depend on rainfall.

• My uncle had an irrigation system installed in his front yard so he wouldn’t have to set up the sprinkler to water his grass.

Petroleum-a kind of oil that comes from below the ground and that is the source for gasoline and other products

Examples:

• The gasoline that fuels our cars was made from petroleum.

• Texas has many petroleum reserves.

Tourism-traveling somewhere for pleasure; the business of providing hotels, restaurants, entertainment, etc., for people who are traveling

Examples:
● Egypt makes a lot of money from tourism; many visitors from all over the world come to Egypt to see the great pyramids built thousands of years ago.

• One of my favorite hobbies is tourism; I love to travel.
