Cellular Respiration is a chemical reaction that is fundamental to all living things. It happens in every cell of every plant and animal.

Cellular Respiration is the reaction between glucose (from food) and oxygen in the air you breathe. It produces carbon dioxide and water (waste products) and ENERGY! Energy is needed for movement, growth and repair and generally staying alive.

​Photosynthesis and cellular respiration can be thought of as opposite processes.

•Photosynthesis removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and releases oxygen

•Oxygen is used in cellular respiration to release energy from food and releases carbon dioxide

Plants carry out both photosynthesis and cellular respiration. They make their own food, and then break down those glucose molecules later, generating ATP to power their cellular processes​

We can't make our own food via photosynthesis, so we have to eat other organisms to gain glucose, which powers the process of cellular respiration in our bodies.

​Animals can't do both!
