A "pronoun" often refers to or replaces the subject of a sentence. ​ ex: I, you, we, us, she, her, he, him, they, them.

"Ils" refers to a group of masculine nouns. This could be a group of boys, or a group of pencils for example because the word "pencil" in French is masculine (un crayon).

"Elles" refers to a group of feminine nouns. This could be a group of girls, or a group of chairs for example because the word "chair" is feminine in French (la chaise). ​

The verb être means "to be" or "to exist" and it is irregular. ​That means that it does not follow the normal verb pattern. The following chart shows the verb "être" in all of its forms. MEMORIZE MEMORIZE MEMORIZE!
