5
Just like our bodies, speech is intended for action.
6
It is meant to produce a certain effect on our listeners.
7
Speech acts then are what we say, why we say it, and what it results in.
8
There are three (3) speech acts: locution, illocution, and perlocution.
9
Locution (utterance) refers to what is literally expressed.
For example, one might say something like “I am hungry.”
10
Illocution (intention) is what is meant by the locution.
Going back to “I am hungry”, one might say that to beg for food.
11
Perlocution (response) is the effect of what is said on the receiver of the message.
12
The one who hears the aforementioned statement can be swayed into giving the person a loaf of bread in response to his or her expression of hunger.
