How to Read a Job Ad

The structure for job ads tend to be consistent. Still, that doesn’t mean that you should quickly skim it. Carefully reviewing the company’s write-up of a job will help save you time.

4

Job postings are typically broken out into several parts -- details on the desired qualifications of applicants, and some description of the responsibilities involved in the role.

5

As you are reviewing any section of a job ad, remember that the most important items are usually listed towards the tops.

6

You’ll want to think of a job ad as a map or “key” to getting the job. Are there certain terms that are repeated?

7

Do they list “self-starter” or “good sense of humor” often? That might indicate that they are looking for someone who can be a leader, or that there might be frustrations at the job.

8

Again, don’t make the mistake of quickly breezing over job ads.
