Short Stories

Rogue Wave falls in the short story genre. A short story is a fictional story that often includes one setting and one major conflict. A short story may also have fewer characters than a novel.

Analyze Plot

Most stories recount a series of events, also known as the plot. A story's setting, or the time and place of the action, influences the character and the conflict or the struggle between the opposing forces. As the conflict unfolds, the plot can build suspense, the growing tension felt by the reader. Writers also use foreshadowing, or hints, that suggest future events, to create suspense and increase interest in what will happen.

​Exposition in a plot introduces the story’s setting, mood, the main character, supporting characters, and time. Character development happens during this part of the story.

​Conflict is the problem, crisis, challenge, dilemma, or obstacle presented to the main character.

The rising action is a sequence of solutions to the conflict that the main character tries; it is all the events leading to the turning point of the story. It can be identified by increasing tension, emotion, difficulty, or challenge.

​The climax of the story is the peak of excitement, the moment when the story changes (a turning point), the main character, and the problem is resolved.​

​The Falling action is all the plot points wrapping up, the consequences of the climax, and reflection on the changes in the main character. It can be identified by decreasing tension, an approaching resolution, and relaxation of emotion.​

The resolution is the plots end. It might tie up loose ends or leave important elements of the story unresolved.

​Authors provide clues to help you make inferences or logical guesses based on story details and your own knowledge and experiences. Making those connections help you connect and understand the plot.

To support inferences, you can cite text evidence or specific details​ from the text. As you read, use details to make inferences.

Text evidence: The title of the story is Rogue Wave.

​My experience: On our cruise to Mexico we encountered big waves which would cause the entire ship to rise and fall. At dinner sometimes we had to hold on to our tea glasses so they didn't slide around.

Inference: Based on my personal experience with small waves on a ship​, if Scoot and Sully are on a smaller boat and those are bigger waves, they are going to be in trouble.
