Hardware vs Software

Computer hardware

• Computer hardware is physical components

  • i.e. something​ you can see and touch

• That make up a computer system

• for example mouse​, keyboard, printers.

Computer Software

• Computer software is programs that control the computer system

  • i.e. software Tells the computer hardware what to do

• Two types of software:

  • Application software

  • System​ software

Input devices

• Input devices collect data for the computer to process

  • Input by human - e.g. mouse, gamepad

  • ​Direct input - e.g. barcode scanner, smartcard reader

  • Sensor - data read from environment, e.g. temperature from surrounding

Output Device

• Output the processed information from the computer physically

• e.g. Computer monitor (screen), printer, spea​kers

Processor
