​"Good" or "effective" communication implies "positive" communication as well.

However, positive communication is a contact that leaves people feeling good at the end of it.

It has some important characteristics, such as being:

Characteristics of positive communication

​

As seen before some characteristics of positive communication are: ​​Effective and constructive; ​Supportive, encouraging and helpful; ​Optimistic and promoting development; ​Affirmative

​

Although ​being a good listener is very important in communication, it is a characteristic that is not intrinsic to positive communication so we do not considered it as a correct answer.​​

​According to a multi-national survey, people use more negative words than positive words.

The study reveals that individuals of all ages use 50% negative words, 30% positive and 20% neutral words.

​

Negative statements frequently center on what you do not want or do not understand​.

​

2-Negative words

​In order to improve your positive communication, you should first of all be able to identify negative words. So you can avoid saying/writing them and also to be able to turn a negative sentence into a positive one.

The most common negative words are:

• Never

• Unfortunately

• Difficult

• Impossible

• Terrible

Negative sentences: examples​

The sentence with the most number of negative words was: "Unfortunately, it is very difficult to finish this almost impossible work on time." (3 negative words)

​

The other sentences had the following number of negative words:​

• ​This is not the right way to do what was requested. (1 word)

• ​No, I don´t think you can do that without consulting your superior. (2 words) - in this case don't forget that don't = do not.

• ​I have a lot of work to do, so I can't leave yet. (1 word) - same in this example can't = can not.

3-Converting Negative to Positive sentences​

• Unfortunately it will be impossible for me to make those phone calls today.

​

• That's insufficient and not what we're looking for.

​

• ​This is very difficult and I never manage to complete all the tasks.

• I will be happy to make those phone calls by tomorrow. Thank you for waiting.

​

• I understand you've worked hard to come up with this solution. We feel that it wasn't exactly in the lines of our company's goals.

​

• ​I do my very best to carefully complete all the tasks that I can.

​Negative sentences

​

"It's taking you too long to complete this report."

Using expressions such as "too​ long" might make the person feel a lot of unnecessary pressure and its time dedicated to that task undervalued.​

​

​

Moreover, "Stop talking" is also extremely bossy and unpleasant. It would be better to poliely ask for a moment to organize your thoughts.​

​Positive sentences

​

"It's taking a little bit longer than I expected for this report to be finished. Thanks for waiting."

Using qualifiers such as a "bit longer" and showing gratitude promotes a more positive way of communicating a delay.

​

​

"I appreciate all your effort. Might I sugest this ... ?​"

Here's a delighful way to not undervalue your colleague's work and still be able to share your opinion on the matter.

​

​- ended the sentence with a positive expression such as "Thanks for waiting."​

​

​then you did great and the recipient certainly will take in well count your comment and understand you and your positive effort! :)

But we can change that as we just learned and convert it into a more positive sentence. Let's still check some of negative communication consequences!

As we studied, dropping morale can be a natural consequence of negative communication. ​

​

Specially in the workplace, people ​need to be engaged and connected to the company in orther to feel inspired and motivated to do their best.

​Negative communication can make workers feel more disconnected and loose morale!

​

Negative communication might cause a bad relationship with colleagues and an heavier environment to work, which may lead to demoralization.

​

Moreover, the productivity and efficiency won't naturally be untouchable and "A lot of motivation to work!" and "Maximum productivity and efficiency." were not consequences of negative communication. ​On the contrary, it can lead to a lack of motivation and productivity.

• They make people feel better than most people anticipate.
