Globalization and Government

​Domestic policy - How the federal government rules inside the country including social welfare, healthcare, education

Foreign policy - How the federal government interacts with other countries including national security, promoting peace, spreading democracy, promoting trade

Ambassador - A person appointed to represent the interests of a nation to other countries

Secretary of State - Appointed Cabinet position who acts as head of Department of State; in charge of advising president of foreign affairs

Diplomacy - Maintaining peaceful relationships with other countries

Alliance - Making a peaceful agreement between countries

Treaties  - A formal agreement between countries; usually about peace or trade

Conflict - A disagreement or clash of ideas

Cooperation - When countries work together for a purpose

Often foreign and domestic policies can intertwine as international policies can impact domestic policies

Globalization and Government

Economy - A country’s way of producing or providing what citizens want/need

Embargo - A government ban on bringing in goods from another country

Sanctions - A limitation or ban on certain government interactions; economic, military, diplomatic

Trade - The buying and selling of goods

Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) - A group or agency that is independent of government and works to support people around the world (ex. Red Cross)

International Organization - Groups of governments that work together to resolve issues that cross borders/countries​

The US uses economics and trade options to influence relationships between other countries

Organzations

United Nations (UN)  - A group of 193 countries that agree to keep peace, develop relations, and improve quality of life around the world

World Health Organization (WHO) - Part of UN; works to improve health around the world, gather data, and provide resources

North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) - A group of 28 countries that created an alliance for protection and trade

European Union (EU) - An alliance of nations in Europe to try to avoid conflict by creating an economic dependency and reliance on other nations

Red Cross/Red Crescent - Initially founded to assist with wounded soldiers, volunteers around the world work to protect the wellbeing of others and assist with relief efforts, NGO

North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) - agreement between US, Mexico, and Canada to make it easier to trade across borders​

The US is part of multiple organizations to strengthen alliances and protect against enemies

US Foreign Policy

​Isolationism - US policy of staying out of international conflict to focus on domestic policy

WWI - drawn in by Germany (sinking of ships, Zimmerman telegram)

WWII - drawn in by Imperial Japan (Pearl Harbor)​

Containment - ​US policy of limiting spread of Communism during Cold War (Domino Theory)

Bay of Pigs - US tried to overthrow Cuban leader; mission failed

Cuban Missile Crisis - USSR puts missiles in Cuba; Blockade results in diplomatic resolution​

Korean War - US supports democratic South; armistice results in border at 37th parallel

Vietnam War​ - US supports democratic South; US withdraws, Communist North takes over

Diplomacy - current policy; US tries to use dipolomatic solitions first​
