The Discriminant

In the quadratic formula, the expression under the radical b²-4ac is called the discriminant. The discriminant indicates the number of real solutions of the equation. The solutions of a quadratic equation is also called its roots. Roots are the input values for which the related function is zero.

• if ​b² - 4ac > 0, there are two real solutions

• if b² - 4ac < 0, there are no real solutions

• if b² - 4ac = 0, then there is one real solution.​
