Strategy - Line up the numbers

Align the numbers based on their place value. Then compare the numbers from the highest place value to the lowest until one place value is greater than the other.

Step 2: Start comparing the digits in the greatest place value. In the case we start by comparing the numbers in the ten-thousands place.​

Step 3: Compare the numbers until you find a number that is greater than the others. If all the numbers are equal the entire number is equal.

Comparing Decimals

Comparing decimals works the same way as comparing whole numbers.

Step 1: Line up the place values

Step 2: Start from the greatest place value and compare each digit until you have a digit that is greater than the others. That is the greater number.​

Comparing multiple Numbers

When comparing multiple numbers line all the numbers up vertically based on place value. Then compare each digit starting with the highest place value.
