Eyes- detects light

Ears- Sound and changes in position (balance)

Skin- touch, temperature pain, pressure

tongue- chemicals in food

​Receptors- specialized cells in the sense organ that receive stimuli from surroundings

The nervous system

• enables us to respond quickly and immediately to stimuli (changes) in our environment.

• when a stimulus is received it is transmitted very quickly to from the point of detection to the point where the body can make sense of the information and respond appropriately. ​

Carries impulses (messages) back and forth between the CNS and the rest of the body.

• the PNS is made up of sensory and motor neurons ​

Is made up of the brain and the spinal Cord

• it is the point where decisions are made about the best action to be taken for the stimulus received. ​

​1. Receptor in the sense organs receive the stimuli from the environment

​2. the stimulus is transmitted through the sensory neuron as an electrical impulse

​3. The CNS coordinates or interprets the infrmation it receives from the receptor, a decision is made on how to respond

​4. The message leaves the CNS to the effector organ carried in the motor neuron. this signal will dictate the best response to counteract the stimulus received.

​5. the effector is either a muscle or gland. Muscles respond by contracting to bring about movement and glands respond by releasing hormones int the blood stream.

• Nerve cells are not joined together they have a tiny gap (space) between the point where the neuron end and another starts called a synapse
