​Functions of the skeletal system

1. Support- holds the body upright and off the ground, prevents the organs from crushing one another ​

2. protection- some bones protect delicate organs from injury

3. Movement and locomotion- many bones act as levers which help us to lift objects or to move ​​

4. Muscle attachment- Muscles are attached to the bones by a tough inflexible connective tissue called the tendon. the bones give the body stability while the muscles help the bones to move

5. Production of red and white blood cells - the bone marrow in the long bones of the legs and the short bones that make up the ribcage regularly produce new red and white blood cells.

6. Storage of calcium and and phosphorus salts- Calcium and phosphorus salts are what give bones their strength. when we eat these minerals in our diet, the bones and teeth store them. ​

​This joint allows rotation eg, neck vertebrae, which allow the head to move left to right, up and down and around

​the plane joint is also known as the gliding joint only allows the bones of the joint to slide over each other eg, carpals and wrist
