Translations and Reflections Quiz Review
By Rebecca Burris
2
Translations "slide" each point of a figure in the same direction and the same distance.
Translations on the x-coordinate can move a figure left or right.
Translations on the y-coordinate can move a figure up or down.
We can represent these movements with addition and subtraction.
Translations
3
The figure BEFORE the translation is performed is called the PRE-IMAGE.
The PRE-IMAGE will have points such as A, B, C, etc.
The figure AFTER the translation is performed is called the IMAGE.
The IMAGE will have points such as A', B', C', etc.
Translations
4
In the picture to the right, the Pre-image is the blue triangle.
To move from the blue triangle to the red triangle, we moved 4 to the left, and 5 up.
This rule can be written using the rule: (x,y) --> (x - 4, y + 5).

Write the rule for this translation:
Slide 5 up and 7 right
(x, y)---->(x + 5, y + 7)
(x, y)-----> (x + 7, y + 5)
(x, y)----> (x - 7, y + 5)

Multiple Choice
Determine how to translate triangle ABC to triangle A'B'C' ?
(x + 2, y - 5)
(x + 2, y - 9)
(x - 2, y - 9)
(x - 2, y + 9)
12
Reflections "flip" a figure over a line.
Reflections produce a mirror image.
A reflection will produce an image that is the same shape and size as the pre-image.
Reflections
13
The figure BEFORE the reflection is performed is called the PRE-IMAGE.
The PRE-IMAGE will have points such as A, B, C, etc.
The figure AFTER the reflection is performed is called the IMAGE.
The IMAGE will have points such as A', B', C', etc.
