Respiration/Combustion, Turbines, Solar Power
By Nathaniel Pecoraro
2
A process in living organisms involving the production of energy, typically with the intake of oxygen and the release of carbon dioxide from the oxidation of complex organic substances.
We will use the same term with the mechanical
Respiration

Multiple Choice
All living things go through cellular respiration?
Yes
No
5
Multiple Choice
In respiration breathing in, or adding oxygen creates what as a bi-product.
CO2
Oxygen
Nitrogen
Carbon Monoxide
6
During combustion, the carbon (C) from the fuel combines with oxygen (O2) from the air to produce carbon dioxide (CO2). The additional weight comes from the oxygen. ... Similarly, the carbon from the fuel combines with the oxygen from the air to produce carbon dioxide (CO2).
This process is very similar to how are body goes through respiration

What does Respiration and Combustion have in common?
Points to Discuss: Bi-product & Energy
You have 5 minutes to discuss and answer with someone around you

Respiration & Combustion
Incommon
Both processes are important in the use of energy. Respiration is the body burning the fuels put in and releasing Carbon Dioxide. This happens in all cells. In combustion the fuel is burned directly and carbon dioxide is also produced. Increasing the rate of oxygen being added also increases the rate of usage.
Some text here about the topic of discussion
10
Turbines & Creating Electricity
We do not get electricity simply by burning fuels or creating a nuclear reaction another process must take place to make the energy usable.
11
Fuel is burned
Water is heated
Steam from boiling water spins the turbine
Which spins the generator
Which Creates electricity
Steam Turbine
12
13
Types of power that use Turbines
Nuclear Power - Uses nuclear reactions as fuel
Fossil Fuels - Coal, Oil, Natural Gas and Wood all use this process
Windmills - Are giant air powered turbines
Hydroelectric - Uses the currents of water to power turbines
Geothermal - Uses heat from the earth to power a steam turbine
14
Open Ended
In these processes what creates the CO2 in the use of steam turbines?
Discuss with a neighbor.
15
Open Ended
Why do sources such as wind and hydroelectric not create CO2?
Discuss with a partner.

Solar Panels
Power without a turbine
17
When sunlight hits a solar cell, electrons in the solar cell begin to move in a circuit. (Flow) This is how a solar cell is able to produce energy.
Solar Panels
18
Multiple Choice
Solar Power uses turbines.
Yes
No

With Turbines another can be activated or more fuel can be burned to produce power as needed.
With solar more sun cannot be added so the use of batteries for storage is important.
