Order of Operations

Today you're going to learn the order of operations.

This is just a fancy name for the rules that we have to follow when doing a problem like: 10 - 2 x 4 =

​

How would you try to solve that problem?​

​

Basically, when we have a problem that has MORE THAN ONE operation sign:

-we have to Multiply/Divide FIRST

-then we Add/Subtract SECOND​

​

We would divide 30 by 10 FIRST.

​(30 ÷ 10) + 5 =

Step 1. (30 ÷ 10) = 3

​

And then we have to do the second part of the problem, which is to add 5!

​

Step 2. (3 + 5) = 8

​

So 8 is our final answer!​ Did you get the same answer?

​Did you get 16?

If so, yay!

​

With ​14 + 4 ÷ 2, we would want to divide first because multiplication and division go first, then addition and subtraction happen next.

​

So 4 ÷​ 2 = 2

Then we make sure to add the 14 to it too! 14 + 2 = 16​
