​Capitalization Rule 1

Always capitalize the first word in a sentence.

​Example:

Incorrect: please put ​an ice cube in the lemonade.

Correct: ​ Please put an ice cube in the lemonade.

Always capitalize names and other proper nouns.

Proper nouns are the NAMES of specific people, places, and things.

​

All holidays are proper nouns.

Days and months are pr​oper nouns.

​

​Do NOT capitalize the​ names of seasons unless it begins a sentence.

Examples:

My favorite season is summer.

Summer is my favorite season​.

The Easter holiday occurs in the spring.​

​Commas & Quotations in Dialogue

Rule #1: Use quotation marks to indicate the words that are spoken by the characters.

​

Example: "Help me!"​ shouted the little child.

​

Example: John said, "​I need exercise more often."

​

Rule #4: Use correct punctuation marks and capitalization.

​

Example: “May I buy a new pair of shoes?” Lauren asked her mom.

Note that the quotation marks are outside the end punctuation of the quote; the rest of the sentence has its own end punctuation.

​

If the quote is not a question or exclamation, use a comma and not a period before the second quotation marks. Example:

​“I bought a new jacket yesterday,” Tammy said.
