These days, urban planners are thinking bigger: they’re putting a lot more time into considering how a community can be built to keep its residents healthy.

There is a realization now that how we use land in our communities can have a huge impact on the health and wellness of the people who live there.

The Ontario government created Planning by Design: A Healthy Communities Handbook to provide planners with guidance on the factors to consider when designing a healthy and sustainable community. The document outlines several key priorities for municipalities:

• reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions

• managing traffic congestion

• increasing street safety and vibrancy

• increasing choices for non-motorized transportation (creating bike lanes, for example)

• reducing waste going to landfills

• reducing energy and water consumption and decreasing fossil-fuel dependency

• increasing access to social, cultural, and recreational facilities
