Engineering Design Process
2
What is the Engineering Design Process?
A step-by-step approach used to find a solution to a need.
Identify the NEED (problem), CRITERIA (things the solution must have) and CONSTRAINTS (limitations that will make designing the solution difficult).
Brainstorm multiple possible solutions for the problem.
Choose the most promising solution and build a PROTOTYPE (rough draft of the solution used to prove the idea will work like it is supposed to.
3
What is the Engineering Design Process?
4. Test the prototype and get FEEDBACK (information about the PROS (good things) and CONS (bad things) of the design.
5. ITERATE (repeat steps 2-4 to modify and improve the design. Continue iterating until a satisfactory solution is found.
6. Communicate the results of the solution to others. The more people who have access to your solution, the better!

Multiple Choice
Which of the following best describes the NEED?
Pizza crust has gluten
Your friends arrive in 30minutes.
One of your friends can't eat gluten
You are hungry
6
Multiple Choice
Which of the following is a CRITERIA?
Must be able to feed you and your friends
Can't contain gluten
Friends arrive in 30 minutes
You only have 5 dollars
7
Multiple Choice
Which of the following is a CONSTRAINT?
Everyone likes tacos
You don't have any spices
Corn chips are gluten free
You have peanut butter and jelly
8
Multiple Choice
The step where you identify many different possible ideas to solve the problem is called:
Identifying the need
Brainstorming
Building the prototype
Feedback
9

Multiple Choice
The engineering design process is said to be "iterative" because
It is difficult
It is a set procedure
It always starts with a need
It is repeated many times until a solution is found
12
Multiple Choice
Which of the following is the worst way to communicate results?
Post the results online
Publish the results in a magazine
Market and sell your design solution
Tell a friend

Design Criteria and Constraints
Criteria (Design must):
Prevent egg from cracking
Land on crash pad tarp
Be as cost effective as possible
Each iteration must be built and tested in one class period.
Constraints (Design can't):
Use any outside materials
Cost more than $25
Only 3 iterations allowed
