Choosing Sources for Research

OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, using search terms effectively; assess the credibility and accuracy of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation.

Primary Sources

• Specific data from a single source

• Results and observations in their original context

Plagiarism is the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own. It can be either intentional or unintentional

Do's and Dont's of Research

Do's

• Use direct quotations or paraphrase with citation.

• Summarize works entirely in your ​own words.

Don't

• Present somebody else's words as your own.

• Fail to properly attribute outside sources.

• ​Use copyrighted material*

A reference to a source embedded at the end of a quotation or paraphrase.

A dedicated page at the end of the document with precisely identified sources.

Performing research is an essential academic skillset. You must be able to gather reliable information from diverse resources, utilize it to support your claims, and inform the conclusions of your writing or presentation. Plagiarism must always be avoided through the proper citation and attribution of outside works.
