​Parts of Speech and Understanding Word Meanings are important.

​Learning about them helps keep our minds sharp, and improve how we make our sentences and communicate properly.

​So let's get to it! In some parts of this presentation, you will be asked some questions to refresh your mind regarding the topics we discussed.

I. Pronouns​

These are words that are used in place of nouns in sentences, to avoid repeating the nouns themselves.​

​

​Examples are: you, me, he, she

​Here are some example sentences with pronouns:

• ​My mother helped me with my assignments today, and I appreciate her so much for that!

• ​His project is similar to mine.

• ​Our friends, Toby and Miko, want to help us set up the tree house.

• ​We gave the dog some treats, and it barked happily at us afterwards.

​There are three types of pronouns..

• ​SUBJECT PRONOUNS

  • They are found at the beginning of the sentence, doing the action or being the topic.

  • ​Example: She is my best friend.

• ​OBJECT PRONOUNS

  • ​They are usually found after the verb or preposition.

    ​Example: The teacher gave us an assignment to pass next week.

• ​POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS

  • ​They show ownership.

  • ​Example: There on the floor was his favorite toy truck, now broken into pieces.

II. Verbs

These are words that show action.​

​Examples are: pray, talk, watch, dance

​There are three simple verb tenses...

• ​Simple Past tense

• ​Simple Present tense

• ​Simple Future tense

III. Affixes

These are syllables added to a root word to form a new one or to enhance its meaning.

​Examples are: re-, mis-, -tion, -ly
