Water and Homeostasis
Water is an essential for all living things, including their production of energy. Most of the body’s chemical reactions, takes place in a water solution. Homeostasis is the process by which the body maintains a steady state. Water helps homeostasis by, regulating our body temperature and providing electrolytes that regulate many processes in our cells.

Preventing dehydration
Heavy exercise can make you lose upwards of 4 cups of water per hour, which could result in dehydration if you aren't drinking enough water. Being dehydrated causes you to lose important electrolytes. Symptoms include:
weakness
rapid breathing
weak heartbeat

How much water?
Females between the ages of 14 and 18 need 8 cups of water everyday, while males in the same age group need 14 cups of water. This water can be in the form of foods that contain water or juices and drinks. Although drinks that contain caffeine may not be good source of water for your body since caffeine increases the amount of water your body excretes.

Water vs Sport drinks
Experts recommend that you drink about 2 cups of water 2 hours before exercise. For longer, heavier workouts, a sports drink could be a good choice to maintain energy for the long period of time. However, for 1 hour or less workouts, water would be the best option.
