​Purpose Clauses show why something happens

​For example:

​I am studying so I'll get a good grade on my test.

​They're saving money to go to Europe.

​In order to protect the children, social services was called.

​Turn the oven down so that your bread doesn't burn.

​Be careful not to trip.

​I'm going to work hard so that doesn't happen again.

​Will you come over for dinner? (for the purpose of eating dinner)

​All of these things are happening ON PURPOSE.

​Grammatically

​Purpose clauses are subordinate (aka dependent) clauses. This means that they can't stand on their own. If you try to use a purpose clause by itself, it won't make sense. Go ahead, try it.

​In Latin

​The clause stuff works the same way as English.

​

​Use UT or NE to introduce the clause. (equivalent to so that/in order to/to)

​

​Use a subjunctive verb in the clause.

​

​Venimus ut infantem videamus.

​We came so we could see the baby.

​or

​We came to see the baby.
